Faithful Friends Vatican Radio Interview

Back in June 2000, Larry Wasserman, was interviewed by telephone by Kara Coulter, of the Vatican Radio, during her program called "Generation Jubliee". Generational Communication between youth and the elderly was the subject of the interview.

Some of the discussion went as follows:

  • Faithful Friends is an organization that makes visits to nursing homes in Florida and also maintains an internet web site which supports and encourages nursing home ministers world-wide. There are many resources on the web site that can printed and used directly.
  • Faithful Friends was formed after the loss of both of Larry's parents after long stays in several nursing homes. After committing his life to the Lord about ten years ago, Larry prayed the Lord would lead him to any mission field except the nursing home. Be careful when you tell the Lord where you will not go.
  • It is important for the youth to communicate with the elderly for several reasons:
    • The elderly have a lot of wisdom and experiences from which the youth can benefit.
    • Communicating with the elderly teaches the youth servanthood and gives them the opportunity to minister to those less fortunate than themselves.
" He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." - Proverbs 11:25
  • Communication will take place because the need by the elderly is great and so is their desire for fellowship.
  • The youth should try to listen carefully to the elderly and possibly speak a little louder that normal.
  • Try to get to the elevation where you are eye-to-eye with the resident. This may require dropping top a knee for taller youth.
  • The youth should try to get an idea of the mental and emotional condition of the resident. Never just assume they cannot communicate.
  • Several pages on the Faithful Friends web site give helpful tips on visiting with the elderly: Communication Tips and Guidelines For Youth Visits.
  • The interview ended with Kara wishing us continued success in our ministry.

We were honored to have the opportunity to encourage the youth of the world to visit the elderly. It was an awesome experience to hear the broadcast go out in several different languages to many parts of the world. Many thanks to Kara Coulter for allowing us to speak out for our blessed elderly saints.
